BLEPHAROPLASTY

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that serves to enhance the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids, through the removal of fat bags and excess skin.

The Solution to Eyelid Bags

Over the years, the eyelid skin drastically increases, according to age and hereditary factors; furthermore, the adipose tissue contained in the orbit cavities pushes on the orbicularis muscle and on the tissues located anteriorly to it, becoming progressively more visible and causing the appearance of the so-called “Eyelid bags”.

All these factors contribute to the aesthetic ageing of the eyelids and the ocular region; the extra skin of the upper eyelids, when prominent, can even interfere with vision.

Blepharoplasty, by correcting the extra skin and removing the eyelid bags, gives the eyes and the whole face a fresher and more relaxed appearance.

This surgical procedure can also be performed together with other types of facial cosmetic surgery, such as neck and face-lift.

Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery Explained

When, on top of the eyelid bags and the extra skin, a droopy eyebrow is presented, a brow lift could be suited, in order to reposition the eyebrows and give brightness to the ocular region.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty surgery lasts about 1 hour and can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. In most cases, the patient can go home a few hours after the surgery.

The incisions of the upper blepharoplasty are placed along the natural wrinkles of the eyelids. The surgeon will evaluate the exact amount of skin and adipose tissue to be removed.

The resulting scar will be barely visible after a few days, to then disappear almost completely after a few months. The stitches will be removed after 5-7 days.

When it comes to lower blepharoplasty, incisions are made 1-2 mm below the eyelashes, or much more frequently within the conjunctiva, which makes it easy to remove the eyelid bags without any skin scar.

Recovery

After surgery, the patient should use cream or eye drops for a few days. The return to regular activities will happen after a few days.

The skin scars will have to be protected from the sun for a few months with glasses or protective cream.
