What to Expect from Liposuction?

Liposuction should always be performed in the operating room; in most cases, it is possible to perform this surgery with local anaesthesia and sedation; general anaesthesia is required in cases of very extensive liposuction. The duration of the surgery varies according to the areas to be treated and the quantity of adipose tissue to be sucked; generally, it can last from 1 to 4 hours. The patient will be able to return home a few hours after surgery; When more extensive liposuction occurs, it is usually recommended to stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights after surgery.

The technique consists in introducing a cannula into the adipose tissue, through small incisions of 0.5 centimetres; the cannula is then connected to a suction system.

Aftercare & Recovery from Liposuction Surgery

After the operation, the patient must wear an elastic dressing band for as long as prescribed by the surgeon; the band will reduce the post-operative swelling as much as possible: swelling and bruising will disappear within a few weeks; although an initial result is noticeable even after a few weeks, to see the final result of liposuction it is necessary to wait 3 months from the day of the surgery.

The stitches will be removed after a week and the patient can return to normal activities after a few days, always depending on the extent of the surgery. The pain of the first days after surgery will be easily controlled with common anti-inflammatory drugs. In order to optimise the results of liposuction surgery, it is strongly recommended to book a series of lymphatic drainage massages for a few days and resume as soon as possible the sports activity.

The classical scars of the abdominoplasty are around the naval and over the pubis, just below the bikini line. In cases of massive weight loss and an extensive amount of extra skin to be removed, the surgeon might advise performing a “fleur de Lys” Abdominoplasty, which involves an extra vertical scar from below your sternum to the pubis.
