What is Breast Implant Replacement?

Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure that changes breast implants.

On average most patients will need their breast implants replaced after 10-15 years after the original procedure, for various reasons.

On the other hand, if the patient remains happy with the result and the implants feel comfortable, there is no medical reason to replace the implants for about 20/25 years.

However, if you had your implants for so many years it is advisable to check your implants every 2/3 years with an ultrasound, mammogram or MRI scan.

There are Several Reasons Why Patients Ask for the Replacement (or Removal) of their Breasts implants

The most common reasons are:

  • Capsular contraction
  • Increase or decrease the size of implants
  • Implants sitting in the wrong positions
  • Ruptured implants
  • Seroma
  • Replace old implants
  • Aesthetic changes caused by pregnancy, weight loss and ageing
  • Rippling

The implant replacement surgery will take between 1 and 2 hours depending on your clinical need.

In the case of a capsular contraction, the surgeon will recommend doing a capsulectomy (Removal of the capsule). If a larger implant needs to be inserted, the breast implant pockets usually will need to be enlarged internally (capsulotomy).

When instead the aesthetic appearance of breasts needs improvement, the implant replacement might then be performed at the same time as a breast uplift or a revision of the breast implant pocket.

The treatment of rippling (folds and wrinkles on the implant visible through the skin) usually consists of repositions the implants below the pectoral muscle, injecting fat under the skin (lipofilling) and/or changing the kind of implant.

In order to replace the implants it is usually possible to use the same incision that was used to perform the breast augmentation.
