People choose to undergo breast reduction surgery for many reasons. Often it is due to the fact they are not confident in their body as the size of their breasts can cause them to feel self-conscious and unhappy, as well as causing pain and discomfort.
Breast reduction surgery is an invasive procedure that can take a while to recover from, so it is important that you are extremely careful post-surgery.
Your surgeon should provide you with all the necessary information and care post-surgery, however, there are still a few top tips which can help ensure your recovery is as easy as possible.
The first step to take in aiding your recovery is to plan ahead of time. Due to the nature of the surgery, you will need to take 2-3 weeks off work afterwards in order to ensure your initial healing goes well.
This means you should make arrangements with your job as well as any childcare arrangements that may be necessary before going in for your surgery to ensure you have nothing to worry or stress about when you come out of the operating room.
The total healing time from this surgery is around 6 weeks and the first few days after surgery are important.
In the first one to three days, you should avoid any lifting or activity which could cause your stitches to tear or cause you pain. Rest is advised in these initial days to help ensure your body can begin the healing process.
During this time the best tip for recovery is to ask for help when needed and to take your pain medication as instructed. This helps ensure you are as comfortable as possible and have the help you need.
The following week or two should see a reduction in the amount of swelling and pain you are in. Pain medication can be taken to help but should only be taken as advised to avoid any complications.
You should still be resting at this point, however, you may be able to get up and walk around, take a shower as well as do some light movement during this time. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity is not advised during this period.
Some two to four weeks post-surgery should see a significant improvement in swelling, pain and bruising. You should now begin to get back into your normal routine, however, you should still avoid over-exerting yourself. You may be able to return to work at this point if your job isn’t physically demanding.
A great tip for helping recovery along is to ensure you do spend some time moving around. This doesn’t mean you should jump into doing a full body workout but taking a walk around or doing some very light movement may be helpful.
Up to six weeks after your surgery, you should be feeling almost better. Speak to your doctor before jumping back into anything strenuous, however, exercise and other normal activities can usually resume at this point.
After this, the best thing to do is to look after your scarring. Using oils and moisturisers and massaging the scars can help reduce their appearance over time. They will usually fade with time and you will start to notice them less and less.
