The Swan’s Misuse Of It Caused Controversy
When cosmetic surgery and treatments appear on television, it is typically used as a smaller part of a wider lifestyle makeover or a required facet of essential treatment, such as part of liposuction.
However, one exception to this was the exceptionally controversial show The Swan, which had a concept that caused considerable harm to the people who competed on it.
The idea of the show was to take what the show called “ugly ducklings” (itself a harmful descriptor) and use a set of specialists, including a physical trainer, cosmetic surgeons and aesthetic dentists to create a transformation programme to turn them into ‘swans’ for a pageant at the end of the series.
It lasted one year and 18 episodes before being cancelled and has since been heavily criticised for its approach to body image. Other shows that have explored cosmetic surgery have focused on the outcomes each individual wants rather than a prescribed ideal of beauty.
An Artist Used Plastic Surgery To Transform Herself Into A Work Of Art
The artist Orlan wanted to explore how different male artists saw the ideal woman, and with that in mind, she began an art project called The Reincarnation of Sainte-ORLAN.
From 1990 to 1995, Orlan had nine plastic surgery operations to model parts of her body to resemble different prominent elements of works of art, such as the Mona Lisa, Diana, Venus, Europa and Psyche.
With that in mind, the treatments themselves were treated as a theatrical event in themselves, with costumes worn during the procedures by designers such as Paco Rabanne, poetry readings and musical performances.
