Gynecomastia Explained

Gynecomastia is a condition in which the mammary gland in men, usually found to be atrophic, increases in size. This condition must be not confused with a pseudo-gynecomastia, a term indicating the increase of mammary region in man due to an increase in adipose tissue only.

Taking certain medications and drugs and some medical conditions can cause gynecomastia, although the exact cause often remains unknown.

The reduction of excess breast tissue can be very useful for an aesthetic improvement of the whole thorax region and solves an issue that often also affects the psychological well-being of the patient.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts between one and two hours; it usually requires a night of hospitalization.

What to Expect from Gynecomastia?

When it comes to actual gynecomastia, it is usually necessary to remove the glandular tissue through incisions located around the areola; in some cases, it will also be necessary to remove parts of the skin, so the scars may be more extensive.

If the enlargement is due to adipose tissue, the procedure to be carried out is liposuction. Tiny incisions will introduce a cannula that, thanks to a suction pump, sucks the adipose tissue.

The stitches will be removed after a week. The return to normal life is very rapid and the patient can resume work after two weeks.
