MASTOPEXY (BREAST UPLIFT)

Mastopexy is the surgery to lift a fallen breast and at the same time improve the shape, possibly increasing the size with an implant.

Mastopexy Explained

Over the years, due to the effect of gravity, breasts tend to fall, the skin loses its elasticity and the mammary gland loses consistency; pregnancies and breastfeeding greatly affect this process: often after one or more breastfeeding the breasts appear, as well as fallen, emptied.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia or with sedation, it lasts between 2 and 3 hours, and sometimes requires a night of hospitalization. The incisions of mastopexy are placed around the areola so that once the typical redness of recent scars has disappeared, they will be barely visible. When the amount of skin to be removed is greater, a vertical scar must also be made from the lower edge of the areola to the mammary sulcus.

The stitches will be removed after 2 weeks. After surgery, the patient will have to wear a sports bra for a month.

Mastopexy Before and After by Dr Mileto

Is Mastopexy Right for You?

Mastopexies (or breast lifts) are procedures where the nipple is repositioned on the chest wall, with excess skin removed and the surrounding tissue tightened. Many choose to opt for this surgical operation because they’re concerned about the look or feel of their breasts, whether they’re flat and/or drooping, or if the areola size has increased.

Weight loss and gain, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all change the shape and size of the breasts, as can age, genetics, and gravity.

The procedure itself is typically carried out on an outpatient basis, which means there’s no need to stay overnight. It takes approximately three hours to complete and is typically done under general anaesthesia. It is also possible to have breast implants at the same time.

What are the Types of Mastopexy Procedures?

There are various different types of breast lift procedures, and the most appropriate one will depend on the reason for the surgery.

A lollipop lift (also known as a keyhole or vertical lift) involves making an incision around the areola and down to beneath the breast so sufficient skin can be removed to reshape the breast. Doughnut lifts, meanwhile, involve making an incision around the areola on their own, allowing for a smaller area of skin to be removed.

The crescent lift is for breast augmentation to prevent sagging, with an incision made at the top of the areola so that implants can be fitted. Anchor or inverted T-lifts are one of the best procedures for breast shape and durability, with the procedure particularly beneficial for women with extensive sag. Note that it does leave a scar below the crease of the breast, depending on how much skin needs to be removed. This should heal and fade over time, however.

What are the Benefits of Mastopexy?

Breast lift procedures are carried out to rejuvenate the breasts and reposition them if they’ve started to look saggy or drooping. Excess skin is removed, and the surrounding tissue is tightened to give a more youthful shape and appearance.

Mastopexies can help improve self-confidence and self-esteem, giving long-lasting results, a more youthful appearance, and ensuring that clothes fit better, with only minimal scarring.

What are the Risks of Mastopexy?

As with any serious surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications with mastopexies. It is important that you are familiar with the potential risks and discuss them fully with your plastic surgeon before going ahead with any procedure.

The risks of breast lifts include:

  • Infection
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Irregularities in breast contour and shape
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Bleeding
  • Fat necrosis (where fatty tissue deep in the skin starts to die)

FAQs for Mastopexy

Implants can give a nice look either over or under the muscle. During the consultation Mr Mileto will be able to advise which technique is better for you, based on your body anatomy and desired result. Mr Mileto also specialises in the dual plane and the custom dual plane technique.

During consultation Mr Mileto will at first examine your chest taking precise measurements of your breasts. Based on that and also taking into consideration your desires, he will be able to advise about the best size of implants, and things like projection or shape (round vs teardrop).

You will also be showed before and after of other patients, to see what kind of results you like.

Most importantly you will be using the Mentor or Motiva Volume Sizing System, which are volume sizing devices used to help you decide what size of implants to choose.

The surgeon will try his best to accommodate your desires but of course the are some limits determined on many factors like for example the dimension of your chest, or how much is your skin able to stretch without developing stretch marks, or without causing sagging or your breasts.

1 week is usually enough if your work is not physical, otherwise better to take 2 weeks. For the stay at home mums: make sure you get some help at home for the following 1 week.

You can start moderate exercise with lower body, like walking fast or cycling , after only 4 weeks. Anything more intense and involving your upper body needs to wait 6 to 8 weeks.

You will need to take painkillers for the 7 to 10 days.

If implants feel comfortable, and if you are happy with your breast appearance, there is no need to to replace the implants for 15-20 years.
We would recommend though to have check up with an ultrasound every 3 to 5 years.

Smooth implants are perhaps a better choice in people who are very slim, with excellent skin elasticity and only when placed behind the pectoral muscle.

Textured implants are definitely a better choice when placed behind the mammary gland, with larger volume of implants and when a mastopexy is also needed.

Yes, you will need to use a front fastening sport bra for the following 6 to 8 weeks. We will advise you where to buy it.
