MONSTPLASTY

The mons pubis is the fatty tissue located over the pubic bone.

Monsplasty Explained

The mons pubis is the fatty tissue located over the pubic bone. Its ideal shape and size are the result of the correct balance of fat and skin in the area and are an essential component of a beautiful-looking genital area.

If the mons size is enlarged, it will bulge through clothing, making the person self-conscious, and it can often be resistant to weight loss. The excess of volume in the pubic area can be related to an excess of fat, skin or both skin and fat tissue.

A tendency to have more fat in this area can be congenital, something you are born with: some people can be of normal weight, or even underweight, but they will still have a prominent mons pubis, due to a genetic disposition to gain fat on the pubic area.

Monsplasty Procedure in Details & Recovery

A larger mons pubis can also be related to being overweight. If the extra volume over the pubis is related mainly to a fat excess, the treatment indicated will be liposuction. In this case, the scars will be minimal, 2 or 3 mm, which is the size diameter of the cannulas used to aspirate the extra fat.

In other cases, the enlarged pubic area is caused by an excess of fat and skin, or skin only, like happens after important weight loss or pregnancy. Women who developed extra skin on their abdomen will often show extra skin over the pubic area, and therefore when having a tummy tuck your surgeon might also recommend a reduction (or a lift) of the pubic area.

In some cases, cosmetic surgery on the abdomen reveals the fatty tissue of the mons that was already there but ignored by the person’s focus on their stomach size. Mons Reduction Surgery or a Pubic Lift is the operation that removes fatty tissue and loose overhanging skin from the pubis, to flatten and lift pubic area.

The surgery is usually done in 2 ways, depending on the amount of skin to remove and the lifting effect to achieve.

The first option will be a crescent excision above the pubis, leaving a scar similar in shape and position to the Caesarean section scar. If the pubis reduction is done at the same time as a tummy tuck, you will only have the scar of the tummy tuck.

The second option, when more skin needs to be removed, will be a fleur de Lys-shaped excision, which will leave an inverted T scar over the pubis.

At the end of the procedure, the wounds will be closed with internal adsorbable sutures.

During the first weeks, you will experience moderate pain, swelling and bruising, and minimal bleeding. You will be prescribed painkillers and antibiotics for 7 days. Return to work is after 5/7 days.

The patient will be able to resume moderate exercise and sexual life after 4 to 6 weeks. As for any other surgery, also labia mons pubis reduction involves minimal risk of complications like infections or bleeding. The scar will start to fade after 12 to 18 months.
