Augmentation Mastopexy Explained

A breast uplift is a cosmetic procedure that aims to improve the shape and size of the breasts, creating a more youthful, uplifted appearance.

Many patients experience drooping and a natural loss of shape in their breasts, this is usually related to ageing, pregnancy, weight loss and breastfeeding.

When breasts are sagging, sitting low on the chest, and with nipples pointing downwards, we usually call this condition ptosis of the breasts. There are different grades of ptosis, from mild to severe, depending on the position of the nipples on the chest and the amount of extra skin. When the nipples sit in a normal position (above breast crease) but the breast gland is still sagging, we usually speak of pseudoptosis.

What is the Goal of Augmentation Mastopexy?

When the breasts have also lost volume, a breast implant can be positioned at the same time as mastopexy to improve the breast fullness, volume and cleavage.

The mastopexy not only removes skin but also reshape completely the breast gland internally, ultimately improving breast shape and appearance.

In this procedure the nipple always maintains its connection with the breasts, therefore nipple sensitivity can sometimes be reduced, due to surgery, but usually not completely lost and often you will regain normal nipple sensitivity within 1 year.

Different Scars for Breast Uplift With Implants

Also called donut mastopexy. When using this technique, the surgeon will be able to remove only skin around the areola, and reduce the areola size; for this reason, the areola lift is indicated only when a minimal lift is required, or in order to reduce areola size and shape, like in cases of tubular breast correction. The implant can be inserted from a small scar along the breast crease, or from the same areola.

 

With this surgery the scar will be placed around areola, along the breast crease, and there will be also a vertical scar running from the inferior edge or areola down to the breast crease.

The scar all together has the shape of an anchor. The length of the scar along breast crease may vary depending on the amount of skin to remove. With this technique surgeons can treat every case of ptosis, from moderate to severe.

 

The vertical mastopexy, or Lejour, involves a scar placed around areola and the vertical scar from inferior edge of areola to the breast crease, so there will be no scar along crease.

This surgery is indicated in cases of mild to moderate ptosis and skin excess.

When indicated, the vertical mastopexy has ultimately less scar and consequently a faster recovery compared to the anchor scar technique.
