Often simply known as breast implants<\/a>, breast augmentation surgery is a popular, routine cosmetic surgery procedure, but given that it is a surgery, a patient will have a comprehensive consultation to explore what the best procedure will be for them and for what they want to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As well as this, surgical procedures tend to be designed to last quite a long time, as people naturally do not want to concern themselves with regular procedures as long as there are no <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a very common question that is asked is how long breast implants can last, and the answer can vary a lot, from just over a decade to over 30 years in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Long Are They Expected To Last?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of factors that affect how long a breast implant will last, but one point to make clear is that whilst they will last a long time and often longer than you expect, they are likely to need check-ups every few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most surgeons will say that the average lifespan of either silicone or saline implants is between 15 and 20 years, and it must be noted that in most cases when an implant needs replacing it is likely to be caused by capsular contracture, where hard scar tissue forms around an implant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the vast majority of cases of implants being removed before the ten-year mark, it is typically the patient\u2019s choice, as they have different goals for how they want their body to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As long as you choose a surgeon that is highly qualified, experienced and understands your aims, follow all instructions about how to take care of your breasts as they are recovering and have regular MRIs and checkups to ensure that the implant has not ruptured or shifted, you are unlikely to need them replacing for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can Breast Implants Last 30 Years?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Breast implants do not have an expiry date, and so in some cases can last far longer than 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first woman in the world to have silicone breast implants, Timmie Jean Lindsey<\/a>, kept her implants for over 60 years, but by this point, many patients will have had their implants either removed or replaced depending on what they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These were some of the earliest, silicone-based implants, but given that there have been several more generations of increasingly advanced and sophisticated implant technologies that took advantage of the decades of medical technology development and provide long-lasting, comfortable implants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately if you want your implants changed or removed, that can be arranged by a plastic surgeon, and it does not necessarily need to be the one that you originally had the surgery with, although many patients do have their follow-up treatments with a surgeon they already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
