This is a issue with many angles to it.

On the one hand, we may all have seen images of women with what appear to be almost comically large breasts, which are often the result of oversized surgery, though equally there are cases of some women who are either lucky or unlucky enough, depending on one’s viewpoint, to be built that way naturally.

At the same time, there is also the practical issue for a woman who has a mastectomy of a large breast, who will not want to be left with an implant that is significantly smaller than the surviving natural mammary gland next to it.

Assuming your implants are for augmentation purposes rather than post-mastectomy, which means you are looking to go up in size rather than match what was there before, there are some significant practical issues to consider.

Firstly, while bra manufacturers may talk in terms of C cups and D cups, what matters in surgical terms is cubic centimetres (CC) or millilitres (ML) of volume. This translates into weight that you will have to carry every day. For example, 450 ML equates to a pound in weight.

Excess breast weight is not what you want. It can become bottom-heavy and causing scar tissue to build up. Moreover, extra weight can cause back pain and spinal problems, the very problem that can prompt some women with naturally large breasts to seek a surgical reduction.

Much of this is a question of balance. After all, any measurement of breast volume must be put in context with your own physique: an average breast on a tall woman will look much larger on a petite lady.

Other considerations include how you want to be seen in different social situations. Will you want to be on the beach a lot in a bikini? Or will you be involved in the sort of social events where you might want to avoid too much attention being paid to your cleavage?

Lifestyle consideration also include how active you are, such as whether you like doing sport, were sometimes larger breasts can be an impediment to comfort and performance, not least when it comes to finding the right size sports bra.

For all these reasons, it is important to discuss the matter at length with your consultant first. When deciding how big you want to go, it is important that this is ultimately your decision, not that of your partner, or based on any perception of social expectation.

The key to remember is that it is you who will wake up and go to bed with these augmented breasts and you will need to feel happy with them in yourself, as well as physically comfortable.

Many women are dissatisfied with their bust size, either because they are both too small, or because there is a significant difference in size between them.
