Ears, by contrast, rarely get much attention. Yet for some, the shape and size of them is something that can cause significant distress and confidence issues.<\/p>\n

The outer ear is made of cartilage covered in skin and the structure of the cartilage includes a series of folds in a normal ear. A lack of folds causes the ear to be unusually prominent.<\/p>\n The operation deals with this by surgery that makes incisions at the back of the ear. This provides access to the cartilage that can be reshaped in order to artificially provide the folding effect. This pulls the ears back in and ensures they can no longer be prominent.<\/p>\n Operations are usually carried out under a general anaesthetic and take an hour or two, but while there will be some bandaging in the short-term (around 7-10 days), the scarring will not be prominent, not least because the very nature of the operation will make the area around the back of the ears a lot less visible. If the scars do thicken, this can be treated with laser surgery later<\/a>.<\/p>\n It should be noted that the procedure does not normally provide absolutely perfect symmetry between the ears, but the differences will be small and barely noticeable. What will be evident, however, is just how much less prominent your ears are.<\/p>\n Both men and women might consider an ostoplasty.
